9 Facts of EURO 2020 that is Full of Irony

Facts of EURO 2020 – For 28 days, EURO 2020 entertained all soccer lovers worldwide. This year’s competition was postponed for a year, which was held in June 2021, instead of June 2020. The pandemic caused the delay which might have also changed the preparation of all teams.

If you are either Italian or English national team fans, then you will still remember all events that took place during the competition. There are surprises, sadness, excitement, and lots of things that make you want to watch all the matches over again.  Yet, it is more interesting to talk about very unique facts of EURO and the finalist’s source from Nowgoal site.

Facts of EURO 2020

Fact #1

The Euro 2020 final at Wembley was such a great match when Italy had to face the host, England. England aimed to get the first European championship, while Italy aimed for the title that they haven’t reached again within 53 years.

Fact #2

Through all the European championships of all time, Italy lost twice in the final after its first triumph in Rome at Euro 1968.  Meanwhile, England succeeded in reaching the semi-final for the first time in Euro 2020 and finally reached the final.

It is interesting to find out that both Italy and England needed the extra time in winning the semi-final matches at Wembley. Italy beat Spain after a 1-1 draw with penalty goals, while England beat Denmark in 2×15 extra time.

Fact #4

So far, there have been three teams that won the UEFA European Championship on their home base. They were Spain in 1964, Italy in 1968, and France in 1984. Meanwhile, Portugal lost the final match at their home base in 2004 and France experienced a similar thing in 2016.

England is the 13th country that reached a EURO final for the first time before. Other countries include Greece and Portugal in Euro 2004, Yugoslavia in 1960 and 1968 as well as Belgium in 1980. All of them managed the final match but failed to get the title.

Italy has won ten out of 27 games. Meanwhile, England won eight out of the same number of games. But, England scored 33 goals in which Italy scored 31 goals.

Fact #7

The last time Italy vs English match ended with the victory of Azzuri 2-1. It was at the 2014 group stage of the World Cup in Manaus.  

Fact #8

EURO 2020 was the tenth tournament when Italy could reach the final match. It is the seventh in a row after being kicked out of Sweden’s EURO 1992.  Italy failed to make it to the group state in 1996 and in 2004. They ‘only’ reached the quarter-final at EURO 2016.

Mason Mount, Reece James, and Ben Chilwell succeeded in winning their team, Chelsea at European Cup and also EURO final victories in the same season.

Fact #10

Regardless of the hard effort in the semi-final in beating Spain, Italy managed to lengthen the unbeaten run record to 33 matches in international games. It breaks the national record which lasted since the 1930s.
